Last month, the folks at Samsung introduced their 2014 flagship, the much-awaited Galaxy S5, during the Unpacked 5 event along with three new wearable devices, but Samsung’s previous product launches taught us that the Korean phone maker aims to transform the Galaxy S series into a whole family of devices.
Last year, a couple of months after the Galaxy S4 was officially introduced, Samsung announced three new S4 relatives: the Galaxy S4 Mini (which was a more compact device orientated to the mid-range segment), the Galaxy S4 Zoom (which brings an impressive 16 MP camera with OIS), and the Galaxy S4 Active (which is a ruggedized S5 variant).
If the latest reports are to be believed, the freshly-announced Galaxy S5 will have the same faith, as an alleged Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has just made an appearance on Indian import site Zauba. Usually, the said website holds information about new devices that had entered India with the purpose of being tested by developers.
Zauba’s data base reveals that, on March 4th, eight Samsung smartphones code named SM-G870a (purported Galaxy S5 Mini) were shipped from South Korea for research and development purchases.
Even though the document doesn’t reveal anything about the handset’s specs or software, it shows that the price of a unit is INR 22,253, which might be the price point of the S5 Mini once it hits the market. What lead us into believing this is that the price ratio to the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the SM-G870a is the same as the one between the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S4 mini.
Rumorh has it that the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will sport a Super AMOLED display and that it will run Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, also borrowing some of the S5′s software features. Even though no one knows exactly when the smartphone will be officially launched, we are expecting to see the shrunken Galaxy S5 sometime in the June – July time frame.
