Garminhas announced the Garmin Xperia Edition app for navigation on Sony Xperia devices, including walking directions on the Sony SmartWatch 2.
As we revealed previously, thenew Garmin software will let you have walking directions on your wrist, so you don’t have to be constantly pulling your phone out of your pocket to find out where you are going.
The extension app for SmartWatch 2 will be available to download from Google Play and, via Bluetooth, will bring walking directions from either Garmin Xperia Edition or the Navigon for Android app. That means that if you have a SmartWatch 2 that you’re using with a non-Sony device, you can still get the benefits.
SmartWatch 2 will show you a map, your position and where your route is taking you, with the ability to zoom in to see more detail.
As for the Garmin Xperia Edition, this will give you Garmin navigation, with premium features including the likes of lane guidance, onboard maps and traffic. You’ll have the ability to find points of interest, with a live camera view function, as well as share your travels with friends and family via Glympse.
There is full driving navigation on offer, with live traffic integration, 3D in-map views and speed limit warnings, as well as support for the Garmin HUD, if you want to beam those directions onto the windscreen of your car.
The Garmin Xperia Edition app will be “available” from March 2014, although there’s no mention of what devices it will support or be bundled with. All rumours are suggesting that the Sony Xperia Z2 will be launching at MWC 2013, so we suspect we’ll see it featured there.
The premium Garmin Xperia Edition app will be free for the first 30 days, after which you’ll have to subscribe to keep the full functionality. You’ll still get access to map views and pedestrian navigation if you don’t subscribe, but thereafter, a $2.95 month cost will open it up again.
